On Cambridge Breakfast, the huge steam engines which pumped sewage out to Milton.
Cambridge’s Museum of Technology tells a remarkable story of how the city dealt with two of the unavoidable consequences of a growing population — sewage and rubbish. The former Cheddars Lane pumping station opened in 1894, burning the city’s refuse to power huge steam engines which pumped sewage out to Milton.
Two of the people helping to keep that history alive are former city council leader, friend of the station, Lewis Herbert, who’s giving a Rubbish History of Cambridge talk at the museum, and Alan Denney, who has volunteered there for more than 50 years and helped recreate its historic Ash Railway.
