In the past few days the online radio app TuneIn has undergone something of a makeover. In doing so its given radio stations – and advertisers – a chance to see the popularity of all the online stations.
The Favourites that users can bookmark on phones, tablets, PCs, Smart TVs, etc are now listed as followers. Among the local stations on our patch this gives the following information.
- Heart Cambridgeshire 11,900 Followers
- BBC Cambridgeshire 10,900 Followers
- Cambridge 105: 4,600 Followers
- Star Cambridge: 3,200 Followers
- CAM FM: 2,300 Followers
Remember that Heart and the BBC serve much larger areas than Cambridge 105, which targets the City of Cambridge and surrounding villages.
Being online means radio station can be heard anywhere in the world, but there’s no reason why a station such as Cambridge 105 has any more reason to be listened to ‘out of area’ than another. Indeed, TuneIn addresses the listener need to hear the station that broadcasts to where they live through its Local Radio index.
While we’re about it let’s look at how we compare to some of the other community stations in our part of the world
- Cambridge 105: 4,600 Followers
- Future Radio (Norwich): 3,000 Followers
- HCR (Huntingdon): 2,800 Followers
- Biggles FM (Biggleswade): 2,100 Followers
- Zack FM (Mildenhall): 2,100 Followers
- RWS (Bury St Edmunds): 961 Followers.
Regular audience surveys like RAJAR are beyond the reach of community stations like Cambridge 105, but these listener stats from TuneIn show we are very much on a par with local BBC and commercial broadcasters.
Tune in is available online and as an app for devices include Apple, Android, Blackberry and Roku.
