Leigh Chambers focuses on historical fiction with studio guest, Francis Spufford. Mainly known for his wide-ranging non-fiction work, Francis’ debut novel, Golden Hill, has been receiving rave reviews. Set in eighteenth century New York, the Sunday Times called it ‘dazzling’ and The Guardian described it as ‘first class period entertainment’. Francis talks about walking the streets of present day New York with a map almost two hundred years old, and just why it’s taken him so long to get round to writing fiction. We also chat to top selling historian, Alison Weir, about Katherine of Aragon; The True Queen, her first novel on the wives of Henry VIII. And Ben Kane, author of military historical fiction, tells us about his fascination with Roman history and how he makes the battles in his books, convincing. Programme Website
