In this Saturday's Science Show you'll hear how the First World War, that began in 1914, put the world’s chemists to work making chemicals to harm as well as heal ... though overall the outcome was horrific. Back then, chemical warfare was considered humane. But what did the chemists who invented the poisonous gas think of their achievement. And how long did it take to realise that soldiers needed to wear steel helmets? We speak with the author of two books about the First World War, Dr Michael Freemantle who will remind us that Chemistry was not only the destructive force in the war but also protected the troops, and healed the wounded.
