Team members from Cambridge 105 took the station’s outside broadcast van out on Saturday to Cottenham Village College.
The OB unit, affectionately known as Flossie, was at the college as part of a Family Learning Day.
As well as bringing Flossie along, Cambridge 105 ran two well attended workshops.
Many families successfully constructed a working ‘Cat’s Whisker’ radio, a simple receiver, similar to the type used in the early days of broadcasting.
Several more enjoyed a presentation from Cambridge 105 host Greg Butler, who with the help of Kipper the Cat took people through the history of recorded sound from the wax cylinder through shellac and vinyl to the CD.
Young broadcasters of tomorrow were able to take a look inside Flossie before she made her way to Cambridge 105’s outside broadcast from the Oxjam Cambridge Takeover.
Any schools or colleges who would like to participate in Cambridge 105’s community outreach should contact the station at publicity@cambridge105.co.uk.
