Tony Barnfield celebrates the career of Vladimir Aleksandrovich Dukelsky, who studied composition in his native Russia from the age of 11, before fleeing with his family to live in Constantinople and later America. There, the young immigrant was befriended by George Gershwin, who suggested adapting his name. As Vernon Duke, he went on to compose such popular melodies as Taking a Chance on Love and April in Paris and some classical works under his birth name. (R) Programme Website
