Legendary American singer Judy Collins talks to Mandy about the highs and lows of her life and music as she prepares to play some concerts in our region. Cambridge Ghost Tours stage an exclusive seance in preparation for Halloween, recorded especially for the Eclectic Light Show. Nicola explores William Golding's novel Lord Of The Flies as the Cambridge Corn Exchange host a week long run of the stage adaptation. (There's another chance to hear the show on Monday at 11pm). This months show features music from as far afield as Iceland and Japan, including two bands led by trumpeter Dave Douglas, a tribute to Oscar Pettiford from cellist Erik Friedlander, music of the Art Ensemble of Chicago interpreted by an Italian quartet and an early blues from the ukulele of Paul Hemmings. Nick Coleman, from Fulbourn, was a rock journalist until tinnitus struck. His book The Train in the Night tells of the devastating effects of this. In it, he also recounts his musical journey as he grew up in Cambridge. We review it this week along with How Music Works by John Powell which explains just that, and Alan Rusbridger's Play It Again which, if you've given up playing an instrument or are thinking of taking one up, will give you the push you need.
