U’s miss golden opportunity

Cambridge United entertained Blackpool today at the Cambs Glass stadium. Cambridge came into the game on the back of 7 league matches undefeated and after a spirited showing against Leeds United in the FA Cup on Monday night so there was some optimism going into this fixture.

The U’s came flying out the gates and the first half was overall a one sided affair with Blackpool only getting the rare chance on the break. This however appeared to be a game plan by the Seasiders as they kept a solid back five deep behind the ball and frustrated the U’s who couldn’t carve out chances despite their dominance.

The first chance fell to captain Leon Legge who struck the post with a headed effort from a corner on only 8 minutes. The U’s would regret not taking that chances as they were rare in this game. Legge seemed to be the biggest threat for Cambridge as he launched a 45 yard volley that crept just a yard wide of the post.

In the second half Blackpool came out with a different game plan taking the game to the U’s. The match still lacked in clear but chances, both times forcing the opposition keeper into action but nothing either sides fans would of been too concerned about.

The key amount game in the 76th minute when Aldred dragged down Newton off the ball in the box. Aldred was giving his marching orders and Berry placed the ball on the spot. Berry who is Cambridge’s leading scorer this season and the man any fan would back to hit the net here unfortunately put the ball too close to the keeper and Slocombe was able to save.

The rest of the game remained scrappy, it stuck to the theme of the day, both teams had chances but nothing clear cut. The game ended 0-0 and this will feel like 2 points dropped for Derry’s amber army. Going into the game Cambridge would of probably felt happy with a point against a team who is strong on their travels, however due to the nature of the result there will be some disappointed fans tonight.
