In snooker, Cambridge’s Neil Robertson is out of the World Snooker Championship. The Australian lost by 13 frames to 11 against Marco Fu. Robertson needed to win the final two frames to stay in the competition, but fell short. A missed black ball shot in the 24th frame proved costly.
He was pushed all the way by Hong Kong’s Marco Fu on Sunday and Monday in their second round clash.
In athletics, several runners from Cambridge and the surrounding areas were among the 40,000 who took part in this year’s London Marathon.
The Universities of Oxford and Cambridge also went head-to-head in the race which saw a record number of competitors take part.
In reserve and youth football, Cambridge United’s under-18 side saw off their Southend counterparts on Saturday. The U’s won 3-1 in their Youth Alliance clash.
Meanwhile, Histon’s under-19 side had a day to forget on Friday when they were hammered 10-1 by Boreham Wood Whites.
Cambridge City’s reserves were also involved in a high-scoring match. They drew 3-3 with Linton Granta at the weekend.
In men’s football, Cambridge City bounced back from their relegation to the eighth tier on Monday by beating Ely City in the final of the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup.
In women’s football, Cambridge United Women hit a magnificent seven past Denham United on Sunday in their FA Women’s Premier Division 1 South East match.
They had to wait until the 38th minute to score and it was Laura Mills who set them on their way. They scored six more in the second half with Ashleigh Deacon, Becky Taylor and four from Evie Gallop.
In the Women’s Premiership, Cambridge University kept their title hopes alive with an emphatic 6-2 victory over ICA Sports. St Ives against Bar Hill ended up being a home walkover with St Ives the winners.
In the Championship South, Cambridge City Development moved 12 points clear at the top after beating Orton Rangers 5-2.
Elsewhere, the Fulbourn Bluebirds hit five without reply against Isleham United and Cambridge Rangers were hammered 4-0 at home by the Riverside Reserves.
On Friday, Cambridge United Women’s Reserves lifted the League Cup trophy after beating Netherton 3-0 in the final.
Histon Ladies are due to play their last match of the season on Thursday night when they take on the Royston Ladies (kick-off 7.45pm).
In cricket, Cambridge Granta beat Copdock and Old Ipswichian in their opening match of the over 50’s East Anglian Premier League.
The Whiting and Partners Divisions got underway on Saturday. In Division 1, Histon, Foxton and Waresley all won.
In Division 2, Cambridge Granta seconds and Sawston & Babraham won, but Great Shelford lost on the opening weekend.
There were defeats for Cambridge University Cricket Club’s women’s and Crusaders sides. They lost to Cambridgeshire and Gresham’s respectively. But their Blues side beat The Arabs comfortably.
The Blues also beat Cambridgeshire CCC in a friendly on Friday. Cambridgeshire CCC got their competitive season underway against Northumberland at the weekend.
In rugby union, Shelford ended their season on a high with a comfortable victory over Guildford. The Peacocks ruffled feathers in their 36-19 victory.
They took the lead early on and were never out of the lead as the game went on. That result means they finish sixth, a place higher than last season.
Their Nomads side lost to Ealing at the weekend while their third and fourth teams were in respective cup final action. Their thirds lost to their Cambridge counterparts.
Cambridge RUFC lost their penultimate league game of the season against Ampthill on Saturday. The Blood and Sand went down 35-12.
Cambridge are safe from relegation and have a vastly superior points difference compared to the bottom sides anyway. They also have 24 bonus points.
In equestrian, the University of Cambridge’s first team won their regional competition last week to book their place in the nationals competition.
In cycling, Cambridge’s John Mulvey became the 2017 Varsity and BUCS National 25 men’s champion following the BUCS 25-mile time trial and Varsity race at the weekend in Cambridgeshire.
And in darts, Cambridgeshire ended their season on a high with a 23-16 win over Cheshire in their final Premier Division fixture. That results means Cambridgeshire ended the campaign with three straight victories.
