The Local Roundup

@danielbaker1992 has a look at some of the local sports from around the region.

In reserve and youth football, Cambridge City’s reserves found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline against Lakenheath at the weekend.

In women’s football, Cambridge United kept their slim promotion hopes alive with an impressive 2-0 away win at Lowestoft with Emma Jenkins and Sarah Wiltshire scoring either side of half-time.

United are fourth in the Women’s Premier League South East Division 1 and are ten points off leaders Gillingham, although the U’s have games in hand on all three sides immediately above them.

In the Women’s Premiership, Cambridge University threw the title race wide open on Sunday after seeing off St Ives 3-2 in a thriller. Cambridge United Reserves’ match with Bar Hill was called off.

In the Championship South, Milton remain third after drawing 1-1 with Riverside Reserves while the Fulbourn Bluebirds were battered 4-0 by Newmarket Town Reserves.

Cambridge City clinched the ERWFL Division One title on Sunday after hitting 10 without reply against the Silver End Ladies.

That means the Lilywhites have secured back-to-back promotions and the title has been clinched with four games to spare.

In rugby union, Cambridge RUFC were edged out in a thrilling contest against Blaydon on Saturday despite leading at various points in the contest.

Daniel Lewis chipped in with five conversions and Ean Griffiths, Lewis, Albert Portsmouth, Louis Rawlings and Matt Hema all scored tries.

The Blood and Sand eventually went down 43-40, but they picked up a bonus point in the first period which secures their league status for another year.

Shelford were also in action on Saturday, but were undone by Wimbledon whose last rally saw them snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Lewis Cracknell’s penalty had put them 3-0 in front on five minutes. But Wimbledon rallied and were leading 10-3 at the break.

After the interval, Warrick Anderson’s try and Cracknell’s conversion levelled up the scores and on 52 minutes, Tuli Paea’s try got Shelford back in front at 15-10, but they missed the conversion.

Wimbledon again levelled the scores before Cracknell struck another penalty to put the Peacocks 18-15 to the good. But Wimbledon rallied late on and eventually secured a 32-18 victory.

Their thirds beat Ely seconds 46-17 on Saturday, their fourths lost 82-26 against Cambourne and their Colts (under-17) side thrashed Saffron Walden in a friendly on Sunday.

In cricket, Cambridge MCCU were comprehensively beaten by Middlesex in their three-day match at Fenner’s.

Cambridge needed 380 to win the three-day match going into the third and final day on Sunday and had six wickets remaining.

They began the final day on 65 for 4 in their second innings, but were all out for 111 despite the fact that Akil Greenidge made 52 with the bat.

Middlesex won by 333 runs in the end and Cambridge MCCU’s league season is due to get underway this Wednesday, April 12 when take on Leeds/Bradford.

Elsewhere, Cambridge University Cricket Club made a winning start to the season as they beat Hampstead by just one run.

Cambridge made 213 runs batting first, but Hampstead were 212 all out as they fell just two runs short in their chase. The Blues face Teddington in their next match.

Securing the future of Community Radio

Cambridge Radio is the Community broadcaster for Cambridge and South Cambs.

Our brief is to give a voice to those sometimes excluded from traditional media. And the presenters you hear on air are all volunteers themselves who give up their time for free. We do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too.

If everyone who listens to our shows, our podcasts, the businesses we feature, helps to pay for it, our future would be much more secure.

You can support Cambridge Radio by giving monthly or by making a one-off contribution.
