@danielbaker1992 has a look at some of the local sports from around the region.
In rowing, Cambridge’s men fell short against Oxford in the Boat Race on Sunday as their rivals took back The Thames bragging rights. Despite Cambridge’s best efforts, they were unable to catch their opponents whose advantage was too much in the end.
But Cambridge did win their first women’s Boat Race since 2012. Oxford got off to a bad start in the race and never really recovered as the Light Blues eased to victory. Their win is their 42nd overall and Oxford have won 30.
In the reserve races, the men’s race was won by Oxford. Their victory now means they’ve won the last seven reserve races leaving Cambridge without a win since 2010. The women’s race was won by Cambridge who registered their 25th triumph and second consecutive win too.
In women’s football, Cambridge United Ladies recorded an emphatic 4-1 victory over Ipswich on Sunday which owed much to Sarah Wiltshire’s impressive hat-trick. Laura Bright was also on the scoresheet at the Cambs Glass.
United’s reserves booked their place in the Junior Invitation Cup final on Sunday with a 3-1 victory over Wisbech Town. Liz Pamplin and a brace from Teonie Pamplin sealed an impressive win and they will play Cambridge City Ladies in that final.
Elsewhere, Cambridge City Ladies kept their double hopes alive by booking their place in the League Cup final on Sunday. Bella Simmons and Bronte Rapley got the goals as they saw off Premier League Dunstable 2-0 on what turned out to be an impressive away day.
Cambridge University closed the gap on Cambridge United Reserves in the Women’s Premiership with a comfortable 4-1 away win at ICA Sports Ladies on Sunday.
In the Championship South, Cambridge City Development put even more daylight between them and second-place Newmarket with a rampant 5-0 win over Cambridge Rangers in the derby match.
It was also a goalfest in the game between Isleham United and Milton which ended 4-4. The Fulbourn Bluebirds were awarded a home win in their match with Riverside Reserves as their opponents were unable to field a team.
In rugby union, Cambridge RUFC were edged out by Hull Ionians on Saturday despite leading at several points in the match. Cambridge led 14-0 at one point and found themselves 19-7 up at the break.
In a topsy-turvy second period, the lead changed hands before a conversion and drop goal in the last few minutes gave Hull the win. The final score was 31-26, but Cambridge did pick up two bonus points. Their second side fared better though and won 40-10 against Bishop’s Stortford.
Meanwhile, Shelford beat Amersham and Chiltern by a landslide on Saturday. They had to do it the hard way after going 7-0 down early on. But they lead 29-7 at the break and picked up where they left off in the second half.
Tulia Paea’s hat-trick try was among the contributions and Greg White’s try and conversion at the death made absolutely sure of the points. The final score was 69-19. Their fourth and fifth sides were both in action too, but lost to West Norfolk and the Cantabs respectively.
In motorsport, Cambridge driver Luke Davenport had a disappointing weekend in the Brands Hatch leg of the British Touring Cars Championship. He finished 17th in Saturday’s qualifying round and finished 19th in race one, didn’t finish the second race and 20th in race three.
In cricket, Cambridge MCCU’s match with Lancashire got underway on Sunday at Fenner’s. The visitors declared on 338 for 6 on the first day and Cambridge were 15 for 2 at the close of play on day one.
In volleyball, Cambridge and Oxford’s men’s first teams will meet in a mouth-watering cup fixture this Wednesday, April 5.
