Daniel Baker has a look at some of the local sports from around the region.
In football, Histon pulled off an impressive win over Coggeshall on Saturday. The Stutes won 2-1 thanks to goals from James Carman and Will Lawton.
Cambridge City’s match with Hanwell Town was called off and has been re-arranged for later in January. Cambridge United had the weekend off.
Brampton opened up a four point lead at the top of the Kershaw Premier Division, as two goals from Daniel Cain and two goals from Martin Turner helped them win 4-2 at Eaton Socon. There was an important win at the bottom as Gamlingay United edged past Comberton United.
Cambridge University Press defeated local rivals Cherry Hinton by three goals to two. Linton Granta beat Lakenheath 2-1, Fulbourn Institute beat Chatteris Town 2-0 and Hemingfords United and Sawston United drew 2-2.
Only two games survived the weather in Senior A, Haverhill Borough Reserves defeated Cottenham United and Somersham Town beat Soham United 2-0 with both goals coming from Justin Ives.
There was a shock result in Senior B with leaders Red Lodge losing 2-1 at home to struggling Great Chishill. The leaders still have a three point lead at the top.
At the bottom there was an important win for Needingworth United against bottom club Godmanchester Rovers Reserves. Scott Fielding and James Hodson got the Needingworth goals.
Bluntisham Rangers beat Cambridge University Press Reserves, Lakenheath Reserves beat Sawston Rovers 2-1, Steeple Bumpstead sit fourth after winning 3-2 at March Town United Reserves. Ethan Goodale grabbed a hat-trick as Wisbech St Mary Reserves beat Newmarket Town Reserves 6-2.
Clare Town moved to the top of Division 1A after winning 4-2 at home against bottom club Hardwick and Milton Reserves won at Debden. Charlie Daniels grabbed a hat-trick as Thaxted Rangers beat Balsham 6-0.
Eaton Socon Reserves are only 4 points behind the leaders Alconbury in Division 1B after beating them 2-0, Connor Heaps and Kyle Morris with the goals. St Ives Rangers beat neighbours Hemingfords United Reserves 9-0 and Fenstanton beat Houghton & Wyton 2-1.
Over Sports Reserves moved to within two points of the leaders in Division 2A as they beat Gamlingay United Reserves 2-0 and the leaders Mott MacDonald slipped up 3-1 at home to Whittlesford United Reserves. Lee Duffield grabbed four goals as Linton Granta A beat Litlington Athletic 5-1. Great Shelford Reserves beat neighbours Sawston United Reserves 3-1.
Tuddenham 08 moved to within two points of Division 2B leaders March Rangers after beating the 2-1, the Tuddenham goalscorers were Liam Garrett and Martin Turner. Wisbech St Mary A won 3-2 at bottom club Manea United.
In Division 3A, Alex Friend and Oliver Saunders both scored twice as Foxton Reserves won 8-2 at Abington United. There was a big win at the bottom for Melbourn as they beat fellow strugglers Duxford United Reserves 2-1.
Division 3B leaders Wisbech Town Acorns won 4-2 at Benwick Athletic, Luke Gale grabbing a brace for the visitors. Ely City Crusaders remain level on points with the leaders as they won 6-0 at Cottenham United Reserves. Burwell Tigers are now four points off the leaders after losing 6-3 at Wisbech St Mary B.
Fulbourn Institute A made it eight wins from eight in Division 4A as they won 2-1 at Guilden Morden. Kedington sit fourth after winning 6-1 at home to Saffron Dynamos. Harston Bostocks won 3-1 at Cambridge Ambassadors, Papworth Reserves and Bassingbourn Reserves drew 2-2.
Coldham United moved up to fourth in Division 4B after beating Hemingfords United A 10-2. Ely Crusaders won 6-2 at home to March Rangers Reserves and Isleham United Reserves 1-0.
Only two games survived in Division 5A. Ashley Sheehan scored four as Barton Mills beat Steeple Bumpstead Reserves 6-2 and Barrington edged past Thaxted Rangers 3-2.
There was also only one game in Division 5B as Littleport Town Reserves beat Benwick Athletic 4-3 and Wicken beat Marchester 5-1.
In the Percy Oldham Cup Semi-Final goals from Tommy Evans and Carol Foreman helped Huntingdon United reach the final as they beat Whittlesford United 2-1.
Several of our women’s teams were in action at the weekend too and the winners included Cambridge United Development, Histon Ladies, Fulbourn Institute and Cambridge City Development.
In rugby union, Saturday brought a mixed bag of results for our teams. Cambridge’s match with Darlington Mowden Park was called off and will be played in March.
Shelford thumped Dorking 57-24 in their first game of 2018. The Peacocks led 31-10 at half-time and finished the job after the interval, thanks in part to Josh Simmons.
Cantabs lost 13-7 to Chelmsford while the Cottenham Renegades thrashed Haverhill 96-0 in their penultimate game of the season.
In hockey, many of our teams were in action on Saturday in the East Leagues. The men’s winners included Cambridge Nomads 2nds, Cambridge City 6ths and Cambridge South 4ths while the women’s winners included Cambridge South 1sts and 3rds and Cambridge City 4ths.
In handball, Cambridge Handball Club’s men and women were up against the West London Eagles on Saturday. The men got a 33-all draw while the women lost 22-20. Cambridge’s second team also lost to Essex.
In snooker, Cambridge-based Neil Robertson withdrew from the Championship League due to personal reasons. The Australian had won two of his three group games on Thursday and could have booked a semi-final spot on Friday night. His results have been annulled – he had been on course for a semi-final place prior to his departure.
And in basketball, Cambridge Cats Girls played only their second-ever game on Saturday, but lost 29-20 to RAF Alconbury despite a spirited performance.
