Daniel Baker has a look at some of the local sports from around the region.
In football, Cambridge United’s winless was stretched to three games on Saturday as they drew 0-0 with last season’s FA Cup heroes Lincoln.
Both sides had at least one decent opening in the first period, but Cambridge missed several chances in the second period and had to settle for a share of the spoils.
But manager Shaun Derry was determined to take the positives. He said: “You have to dig in, but I felt we did that today and we were just missing that little bit of cutting edge at certain times.
“But that would be ultra picky and I’m not going to be picky today because I thought that it was a very good performance.”
United will also play another FA Cup giantkiller from last season – Sutton United – in the First Round of the competition which was drawn on Monday night.
Cambridge City were involved in a six-goal thriller on Saturday as they made it five league wins a row with a victory over Thame United.
City led 3-2 at the break, despite going a goal down after 10 minutes, thanks to goals from Jordan Gent, Ryan Sharman and Ross Paterson.
Lewis Wilson put the icing on the cake in the second half and there was also a cameo for Nathan Olukanmi who made his debut from the bench.
Histon suffered a bit of deja vu on Saturday as they were forced to use an outfield player in goal for the second week running in their 3-1 win over Wivenhoe Town following a red card for their original goalkeeper.
The Stutes could only name a matchday squad of 14, but it didn’t stop Evan Key winning more plaudits as he opened the scoring on 16 minutes.
Harry Willoughby then levelled the scores before Matt Hayden’s 25-yarder put the home side back in front. Tommy Wright then sealed the win in the second half.
Many of our other local sides were in cup action at the weekend with sides from the Kershaw Premier, Senior A, Senior B and other leagues involved.
In the Women’s Premiership, Cambridge University’s rotten start to the season continued with a 10-1 home defeat by Newmarket Town.
In the Championship South, Histon Reserves beat Fulbourn Institute 4-2 to strengthen their grip at the top while Cambridge Rangers drew 2-2 with Isleham.
Cambridge United Women are into the next round of the FA WPL Cup after beating Enfield Town 2-0 on Sunday, but their Reserves lost 3-1 to Histon.
Cambridge City had four 16-year-olds in their matchday squad on Sunday as they welcomed Bedford and their youthful side won 2-1.
In rugby union, Cambridge RUFC returned to winning ways on Saturday as they demolished Rosslyn Park 50-23 at Volac Park.
Ben Penfold struck four conversions as the Blood and Sand recorded their third league win of the season. Their seconds also won, seeing off Cinderford.
In hockey, Cambridge City Hockey Club made it two wins on the spin on Saturday as they beat St Albans 3-1 in the Women’s Conference East. Rio gold medallist Helen Richardson-Walsh got two of the goals.
The women’s winners from the East divisions included Cambridge City 2nds and 4ths, Cambridge South 1sts and 2nds, Cambridge University 2nds and Cambridge Nomads second team.
The men’s winners included Cambridge City 4ths and 5ths, Cambridge City Veterans, Cambridge South 2nds, 3rds and 4ths and Cambridge Nomads 3rds.
In motorsport, Rob Huff was forced to retire from the main race of the Chinese leg of the World Touring Car Championship following a collision with Tom Chilton.
The incident left the Cambridge driver with severe damage to his car which left him unable to continue, but he is still in the running for the WTCC Trophy.
Fellow Cambridge driver Ben Barker was also in Asia this weekend in the World Endurance Championship 6 Hours of Fuji event in Japan. His Gulf Racing team finished 22nd overall.
In futsal, Cambridge United suffered their second straight defeat on Sunday as they were beaten 8-5 by FC Salisbury United.
In handball, Cambridge Handball Club’s men and women both had success at the weekend with the men beating Liverpool and the women seeing off Peninsula.
And in horse racing, it was a busy day at Newmarket on Saturday with seven races. The winners included Kew Gardens, Withhold and Monarchs Glen.
