In reserve and youth football, Histon took the local bragging rights in their under-18s fixture against Cambridge City. Luke Sargent and Mark Rayment scored for the Stutes in a 2-1 win.
Cambridge City’s reserves fared better than the senior side this weekend, although they did a Connor Loker equaliser to spare them a defeat against Eaton Socon. The final score was 1-1.
In women’s football, Cambridge United were held to a 1-1 draw by the Old Actonians in the league. Laura Mills had put Cambridge in front before they conceded a late penalty.
United’s reserves booked their place in the League Cup final with a 2-0 win over St Ives Town on Sunday. Their opponents will be Netherton who saw off Bar Hill with a 5-0 rout.
Meanwhile in the Junior Invitation Cup, Cambridge City development managed a sensational 7-1 over Cambridge Rangers in their local derby tie.
Cambridge University registered their fifth win of the season on Sunday after thrashing Park Ladies 9-1 in an impressive away performance in the Premiership.
The Fulbourn Bluebirds also staked their claim for a top-half finish in the Championship South by putting six without reply past Orton Rangers.
In men’s rugby union, Cambridge RUFC were back in league action when they took on Coventry on Saturday afternoon.
But the team from the Midlands came away with a 36-27 win. Coventry led 22-12 at the break, but Cambridge were only able to reduce the arrears.
Ben Ibrahim, George Furbank, Cameron Ruddock and Tom Trotter were among the try scorers while Daniel Lewis scored some of his conversions.
Shelford, however, fared rather better with a convincing 50-12 win over Westcliff. Mark Ryder’s try and Josh Simmons’ conversion set them on their way to put them 7-0 up.
Shelford led 12-5 at the break and Simon Hrbek, Tuli Paea, Simmons, Aki Lea and Ryder all contributed further points as Shelford ran out 50-12 winners.
The Peacocks’ Nomads side beat Westcliffe 50-24, their thirds beat Ely 60-15, their fifths beat Wendens Ambo 36-26 and their fourths beat Newmarket seconds who forfeited the match before it started.
Shelford’s men’s five most senior teams all won on Saturday to ensure a 100 per cent record and a memorable Saturday for the Peacocks.
In women’s rugby union, the University of Cambridge’s first team are due to play Hartpury firsts this Wednesday, March 29.
In men’s hockey, it was the final round of fixtures for the city’s teams this weekend. Cambridge City’s sides won three, drew one and lost two of their fixtures.
The Cambridge Nomads managed a clean sweep with three wins including their first team’s 3-2 win over Cambridge South firsts in the derby.
Cambridge South managed two wins, a draw and a defeat while Cambridge University got one of each, a win, a draw and a defeat from their three games.
Cambridge University firsts finished as the highest-ranked men’s team from the city this season and they finished seventh in the Premier A division.
Cambridge City’s second and fourth teams have both been relegated.
In women’s hockey, Cambridge City drew two and lost two while the Cambridge Nomads won one and lost one.
Cambridge South’s sides achieved three wins from three and Cambridge University also got a clean sweep, but of defeats, with three losses from their three games.
Cambridge University firsts were the highest-ranked women’s team from the city this season and they finished sixth in the Premier division despite being docked three points.
Cambridge South firsts and Cambridge City seconds have both been promoted with the latter winning the Division 1N title.
