The Local Roundup

Daniel Baker has a look at some of the local sports from around the region.

In football, Cambridge City crushed Egham on Saturday to make it four wins on the spin in the league.

It was City’s first game since their FA Cup heartache on Monday night and Ross Paterson set up Ryan Sharman to open the scoring.

The hosts led just 1-0 at the break and missed a penalty, but Robbie Nightingale’s men filled their boots in the second half with further strikes from Sharman, Tom Knowles, Jordan Gent and two from Lewis Wilson, including a penalty, sealing a 6-1 win which left the Lilywhites in 7th at the end of the weekend.

The Lilywhites’ development team were also in action at the weekend and drew 2-2 with Shelford.

Cambridge United suffered another frustrating away trip at Mansfield on Saturday and threw away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 at Field Mill.

After a goalless first half, Leon Legge put Cambridge in front, but Jacob Mellis levelled the scores and then Danny Rose struck the winner.

But there was better news for the U’s under-18 side who beat their AFC Wimbledon counterparts 3-1.

Histon also endured a frustrating afternoon on Saturday as they were knocked out of the FA Vase by Cogenhoe. Ryan Ansell’s stunner settled the contest.

In the Kershaw Premier, Great Shelford lost further ground on West Wratting as they drew with Cambridge City Reserves. The winners from our area were Comberton, Cambridge University Press and the Fulbourn Institute.

In Senior A, Girton and Bar Hill were our local winners and in Senior B, Cambridge University Press Reserves were involved in a nine-goal home thriller with Newmarket Town Reserves. It ended 5-4 to the hosts.

Cambridge United Women drew 2-2 with Denham United on Sunday, but their reserves were knocked out of the cup by their Stevenage counterparts as they lost 3-2.

Cambridge City Women lost 2-1 to Acle on Sunday and their development team also had a tough afternoon as they lost 4-0 at home to Netherton.

The Women’s Championship South clash between Fulbourn and Cambridge Rangers produced eight goals – seven of which were scored by the former – in an entertaining derby.

In rugby union, Cambridge RUFC returned to winning ways as they came from 16-10 down to beat Caldy 20-16 on Saturday. Their third team demolished Haverhill 77-5 too.

Shelford also picked up a win at the weekend as they thrashed Southend 60-10. Their third and fourth sides also won.

Cantabs also celebrated success as they saw off Chelmsford 23-20 in a tightly-contested affair. Their second and third teams also won to round off a good weekend for our sides.

In hockey, Cambridge City got their Women’s Conference East campaign off to a bad start as they lost 3-0 at Chelmsford.

In the local leagues, the winners from the men’s divisions included Cambridge South thirds and Cambridge City fourths.

The winners in the women’s leagues included Cambridge City thirds, Cambridge South and Cambridge South fourths.

In rowing, Cambridge University students Melissa Wilson and Holly Hill are involved in the World Rowing Championships in Florida this week and the competition got underway on Sunday.

And in handball, the men’s and women’s teams from Cambridge Handball Club were both in action on Sunday against the NEM Hawks. The men lost 33-29 and the women went down 24-22.

Securing the future of Community Radio

Cambridge Radio is the Community broadcaster for Cambridge and South Cambs.

Our brief is to give a voice to those sometimes excluded from traditional media. And the presenters you hear on air are all volunteers themselves who give up their time for free. We do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too.

If everyone who listens to our shows, our podcasts, the businesses we feature, helps to pay for it, our future would be much more secure.

You can support Cambridge Radio by giving monthly or by making a one-off contribution.
