Daniel Baker has a look at some of the local sports from around the region.
In football, Cambridge City suffered FA Cup heartache on Monday night as St Albans City finally got the better of the Lilywhites in their second qualifying round replay.
The original tie on Saturday ended 3-3 and City came from 2-0 and 3-2 down to keep themselves in the competition with Ryan Sharman, Lewis Wilson and Ross Paterson getting City’s goals.
The replay was hampered by tropical rain and floodlight failure, but it was completed following a delay and Zane Banton and Charlie Walker scored the crucial goals for the National League South side.
Cambridge United climbed into the League 2 play-off places on Saturday after beating Coventry City 2-1 at the Cambs Glass Stadium.
Jabo Ibehre gave the hosts a first half lead and after the break, Duckens Nazon levelled things up for the visitors before Uche Ikpeazu struck the winner.
That result now means that the U’s have beaten Coventry in their last three meetings.
Manager Shaun Derry said: “The quality of the game was befitting with two teams sat in the top seven. Coventry are a good side, we knew that, and had conceded just three goals up until this point.
“We knew they would be a tough nut to crack, but we fancied ourselves today. I said on the back of a great result on Tuesday to take the confidence levels into the game and the players did that.”
Histon suffered a 2-0 defeat against Stowmarket on Saturday. They were a goal down at the break and never really recovered. Billy Clark and Josh Mayhew got the goals for Town either side of the interval.
In the Kershaw Premier, there were wins for the Fulbourn Institute, Cherry Hinton, Great Shelford and Comberton United.
In Premier A, Bar Hill and Milton were our winners and in Premier B, Cambridge University Press Reserves were our only winners.
Cambridge United Women needed a late equaliser from Emma Jenkins to rescue a point against Stevenage in their match on Sunday.
Elsewhere, Cambridge City Ladies came from behind to beat Kettering 5-2 in the Women’s FA Cup and Histon also snatched victory from the jaws of defeat as they beat the Silverend Ladies 2-1 after trailing 1-0.
In snooker, Cambridge-based Neil Robertson booked his place in the second round of the World Open on Monday after beating Noppon Saengkham. He takes on Ben Woollaston on Wednesday in Round 2.
In cricket, the rain caused havoc across our local leagues with many matches abandoned due to the weather. Cambridge Granta’s match with Bury St Edmunds was among the casualties.
In rugby union, Cambridge RUFC suffered their second defeat on the bounce on Saturday as they went down 35-18 at Darlington Mowden Park.
The Blood & Sand were still in the contest at half-time and trailed just 14-10, but the hosts rallied and scored 21 second half points. Their seconds also lost to Richmond Vikings on Saturday.
Shelford threw away a 14-point lead to lose 30-27 at Dorking at the weekend. Peacocks were leading 19-5 at the break and their third side were also in action, but lost to Bury St Edmunds.
And in motorsport, Cambridge’s Ben Barker was in action in the 6 Hours of Cota race at the World Endurance Championship at the weekend.
But his Gulf Racing team struggled in the free practices and qualifying again and Barker and his co-drivers finished 25th out of 26 in the main race.
