The Local Roundup

@danielbaker1992 has a look at some of the local sports from around the region.

In women’s football, Cambridge City edged out St Ives 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller to book their place in the County Cup final despite being down to ten for most of the match.

Carla Penny, Sarah Mosley, Charlotte Gillies and Bella Simmons were all on the scoresheet for Cambridge City.

Their opponents, in what promises to be a mouth-watering final, will be Cambridge United who were rampant in their 5-0 win over Histon.

Sarah Wiltshire’s goal had put them a goal up at the break and Wiltshire, Laura Bright, Nicole Perschky and Dawn Mallett all scored after the interval to secure an emphatic win.

In the Premiership, Cambridge United Reserves’ game with Park Ladies didn’t go ahead as Park Ladies were unable to field a team due to illness.

In the Championship South, Cambridge City development further staked their claim for the league title after putting 14 without reply past Orton Rangers.

Elsewhere, the Fulbourn Bluebirds registered an impressive 4-0 home win over Isleham United and Milton and Newmarket Reserves were involved in a goalfest. The final score was 5-5.

Oxford took university and varsity bragging rights in their match against Cambridge on Sunday. Ceylon Hickman had put Cambridge on terms after they fell behind in the first half.

But two second half goals by Oxford condemned the Light Blues to a defeat in a game refereed by Premier League and Football League official Sian Massey-Ellis.

In reserve and youth football, Cambridge City reserves had a frustrating afternoon as they went down 1-0 at Foxton. City hit the woodwork four times during the game.

But City’s under-14 side won the Mick North & Barry Brewer Under 14 Memorial Cup on Sunday after beating Wisbech St Mary 3-2.

In other football news, the Bar Hill Veterans beat their Cherry Hinton counterparts 4-0 in the Veterans Invitation Cup final.

In rugby union, Cambridge RUFC’s third team came unstuck against Ely’s second team in the league at the weekend. Despite pulling level twice after falling behind, Ely rallied in the second half to win.

Shelford’s teams had the weekend off, but they did host a match which saw the Eastern Counties under-20’s take on Middlesex.

The Eastern Counties won 34-12 and five local players – Jed McDonald, Sam Copeland, Owain Collard, Chayse Tyler and John Bannerman – were all named in the squad.

In tennis, the University of Cambridge men’s firsts are due to take on Durham seconds in the cup this Tuesday, March 21.

In other university sport, the University of Cambridge are set to be involved in lacrosse, fencing, volleyball and hockey fixtures this Wednesday, March 22.

In men’s hockey, Cambridge’s teams once again had mixed results with the most high-profile game, perhaps, the Cambridge derby between the Cambridge City fifths and the Cambridge Nomads. City won that game 3-2.

Elsewhere, Cambridge City’s other teams managed two wins, a draw and two defeats. The Nomads’ two other sides both won.

Cambridge South’s sides won three and drew one and Cambridge University won two and lost one of their three games.

In women’s hockey, Cambridge City’s teams managed three wins and a defeat while the Cambridge Nomads achieved one win and one defeat.

Elsewhere, Cambridge South managed a win, a draw and a defeat in their three games, Cambridge University won one and drew one two.

Securing the future of Community Radio

Cambridge Radio is the Community broadcaster for Cambridge and South Cambs.

Our brief is to give a voice to those sometimes excluded from traditional media. And the presenters you hear on air are all volunteers themselves who give up their time for free. We do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too.

If everyone who listens to our shows, our podcasts, the businesses we feature, helps to pay for it, our future would be much more secure.

You can support Cambridge Radio by giving monthly or by making a one-off contribution.
