The Local Roundup

Daniel Baker has a look at some of the local sports from around the region.

In rowing, Cambridge University students Lance Tredell, Holly Hill and Melissa Wilson all missed out on medals at the Rowing World Cup III in Switzerland at the weekend.

Tredell was involved in the men’s eight final on Sunday afternoon, but his Great Britain side finished sixth out of six.

However, Tredell helped GB to second in the men’s eight heats on Friday afternoon and only Germany beat them.

Hill and Wilson had never rowed before they started at Cambridge, but their Great Britain team also finished sixth out of six in the women’s four final.

The duo had helped GB make the final on Saturday after they performed well enough in the repechage to earn a final spot.

In men’s football, Cambridge United and Cambridge City got their pre-season schedules off to a winning start on Saturday.

The U’s beat St Neots Town 1-0 thanks to a goal from new signing Jabo Ibehre and manager Shaun Derry fielded a different 11 in each half.

Meanwhile, City beat Haverhill Borough 4-1. The Lilywhites led 2-1 at the break and built on that to ease to victory.

Histon got their pre-season off to a disappointing start with a 1-0 home defeat against Wisbech Town in  hot conditions.

In cricket, Cambridge Granta drew with Copdock and Old Ipswichian. Granta went first with the bat and managed 288 all out.

But their opponents also made 288 runs, but lost eight of their wickets. That result meant Granta got 17 game points while Copdock and Old Ipswichian got 15.

In the Whiting & Partners Division 1, only Histon won and in Division 2, Cambridge Granta seconds and Sawston & Babraham won.

In the CCA Senior League Division 1, only the Fulbourn Institute won and in Division 2, there were wins for Cambourne, the Old Leysians and Longstanton. In Division 3, Cottenham and Cherry Hinton were Saturday’s winners.

On Sunday, Cambridge Granta won both their games in the East Anglian Premier Cricket League National T20 Finals Day. They beat Horsford and Mildenhall.

In the CCA Cambridge News 20/20 Walker Cup, the Fulbourn Insitute, Sawston & Babraham seconds and Histon seconds were Sunday’s local winners.

On Friday, Cambridge University wrapped up victory in the Four Day Varsity Match over Oxford. The Light Blues won by 216 runs and had  Ruari Crichard to thank for taking 11 wickets.

In American football, the Cambrideshire Cats suffered their fourth straight defeat on Sunday as they lost to the London Olympians.

In bowls, Cambridgeshire were due to take on Bedfordshire in the Middleton Cup on Saturday.

And in sailing, the Universities of Oxford & Cambridge were due to go head-to-head in the Varsity fixture on Friday.

Securing the future of Community Radio

Cambridge Radio is the Community broadcaster for Cambridge and South Cambs.

Our brief is to give a voice to those sometimes excluded from traditional media. And the presenters you hear on air are all volunteers themselves who give up their time for free. We do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too.

If everyone who listens to our shows, our podcasts, the businesses we feature, helps to pay for it, our future would be much more secure.

You can support Cambridge Radio by giving monthly or by making a one-off contribution.
