In football, former Cambridge United striker Steve Claridge made a surprise return to the field in a pre-season friendly at the weekend.
The 51-year-old, who has played more than 1,000 senior games, turned out for Salisbury in a match against Portsmouth due to a player shortage.
Claridge manages The Whites and Salisbury is the 23rd team he has now played for. He represented Cambridge between August 1992 and January 1994.
Elsewhere, Cambridge United’s goalkeeping coach swapped the Cambs Glass for the Nou Camp on Friday night.
Kevin Pilkington was part of the Manchester United legends team that beat their Barcelona counterparts 3-1.
In American football, the Cambridgeshire Cats suffered their third straight defeat on Sunday at Coldham’s Common.
The Cats were up against the Colchester Gladiators and despite leading 7-0 at half-time, the Gladiators fought back and won 14-7.
In motorsport, Cambridge’s Sam Tomlinson was in Lotus Trophy action at Silverstone on Saturday and finished a respectable 10th in the practice race.
In cricket, Cambridgeshire CCC’s match with Northumberland in the Unicorns Championship got underway on Sunday.
Cambridge Granta beat Bury St Edmunds convincingly on Saturday. They were set 137 to win and eased to a nine-wicket win.
In the Whiting & Partners Division 1, only Waresley won. In Division 2, Cambridge Granta seconds and Sawston & Babraham were the winners on Saturday.
In the CCA Senior League Division 1, none of our sides won, but there was a clean sweep of victories for all our sides in Division 2. Cottenham, Cherry Hinton and Wilburton were Division 3’s winners.
The Leys School suffered quarter-final heartache against Shrewsbury School in their Twenty20 competition. They lost by just one run.
In rugby union, The Leys School have been handed two tasty cup ties for September. Their first team will take on the Samuel Whitbread Academy and their Under-15 A side will take on Bishop Stortford School. Both games are in the Schools Cup.
In tennis, Yujiro Onuma from Trumpington has qualified for a Wimbledon competition. The 12-year-old will be involved in the HSBC Road to Wimbledon under-14 challenge at the All England club next month.
In horse racing, there were meetings at Newmarket on both Friday and Saturday. Dance Diva, Lord Yeats and Home of the Brave were among Saturday’s winners.
In judo, Foxton’s Imogen Ranner will be flying the English flag at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas later this month.
In rowing, Cambridge University’s Imogen Grant was part of the GB composite crew who won a gold medal at the Aegon Koninklijke Holland Beker competition.
Lance Tredell, Holly Hill and Melissa Wilson from the University of Cambridge are set to be involved in the Rowing World Cup in Switzerland which gets underway this Friday, July 7.
In trampolining, Comberton Village College pupil Evie Joseph will be hoping to have a spring in her step when she takes part in the Loule Cup in Portugal in October.
The 13-year-old has been called up for Great Britain and will also be going for the British champion crown in Liverpool in September.
And in bubble football, former Cambridge and Histon midfielder David Bridges is set to captain his Neville Wears Prada team at next year’s Bubble Football World Cup.
