The Local Roundup

Daniel Baker has a look at some of the local sports from around the region.

In snooker, Cambridge’s Neil Robertson was knocked out of the Riga Masters on Friday night by Lukas Kleckers of Germany.

Robertson, who was the defending champion, had beaten Daniel Ward in his earlier qualifier, but lost 4-3 to Kleckers to lose his title.

The Australian spoke candidly about his computer game addiction on The One Show recently and was praised for his openness.

In motorsport, Cambridge’s Rob Huff recovered from a shaky start to claim the Best Lap Trophy at the World Touring Car Championship Race of Portugal on Sunday.

Huff began the race on the front row, but he stalled as he attempted to launch. He was 11th at the end of the first lap, but recovered to finish fifth.

His respectable finish was helped by the fact he played his ‘joker’ lap which helped him make up some of the lost time.

Huff also claimed WTCC Trophy honours for the top independent runner to go with his Best Lap Trophy accolade.

I am really looking forward to taking part in the first Formula One Grand Prix to be held in Saudi Arabia,” says Rob Huff. “It is a great honor for me to be part of this momentous event. I hope that I can qualify for the race and demonstrate how fast we are here in Cambridge, as well as show all my fans the amazing support they get from our partners.

In cricket, Cambridge Granta left it late to beat Great Witchingham by just one wicket on Saturday in their all-day game.

Great Witchingham were 290 for five off their 64 overs and Granta needed four runs off their final four balls to win.

They managed to get them and finished with a final total of 292 for nine. Michael Pepper again impressed with the bat and he made 153 not out.

On Friday, Granta beat Ramsey by 19 runs in their East Anglian Premier Cricket League National T20 2017 Group A semi-final.

In the Whiting & Partners Divisions, none of our sides won in Division 1 while Cambridge St Giles and Great Shelford were the only winners in Division 2.

In the CCA Senior League Divisions, the only one of our sides to win across all three divisions was Cambourne with every other side losing.

On Friday, it was heartache for Cambridge as they lost their One-Day Varsity Match against Oxford at Lords.

Oxford won by just nine runs and attention now turns to the Four-Day Varsity game back at Fenner’s which gets underway on Tuesday, July 4.

In wheelchair basketball, Cambridge’s Jack Perry helped Team GB win gold at the World Under-23 Championships in Canada. Team GB came from behind to beat Turkey.

In tennis, Round 5 of the Cambridge singles in the Cambridge Tennis League was due to get underway on Thursday and will run until Wednesday, August 16.

In American football, the Cambridgeshire Cats returned to the field at the weekend and took on the London Hornets again in the league.

In rugby union, ex-Cambridge player David Langley has signed a professional deal with Wasps. Langley has moved up seven tiers in just two years.

In swimming, the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford were due to go head-to-head in their Open Water Swimming Varsity clash on Sunday.

And in men’s football, former Cambridge United manager Martin Ling has returned to football. Ling has rejoined his former club Leyton Orient as director of football.

Former Cambridge and Histon striker Omer Riza was told he’d have to re-apply for the manager’s job at the troubled National League club at the weekend.

Securing the future of Community Radio

Cambridge Radio is the Community broadcaster for Cambridge and South Cambs.

Our brief is to give a voice to those sometimes excluded from traditional media. And the presenters you hear on air are all volunteers themselves who give up their time for free. We do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too.

If everyone who listens to our shows, our podcasts, the businesses we feature, helps to pay for it, our future would be much more secure.

You can support Cambridge Radio by giving monthly or by making a one-off contribution.
