The Local Roundup

Daniel Baker has a look at some of the local sports from around the region.

In motorsport, Cambridge’s Luke Davenport spent part of the weekend in a coma after he was involved in a nasty accident during the qualifying stage of the British Touring Cars Championship.

Several cars were involved and fellow drivers Aron Taylor-Smith and Jeff Smith were also hurt on Saturday at Croft.

None of the drivers involved were thought to have suffered life-threatening injuries at the time, but Smith and Davenport had to be cut free from their cars.

Taylor-Smith was knocked unconscious and suffered a fractured leg and Jeff Smith suffered multiple chest injuries, extensive shoulder injuries, a broken left arm and concussion.

A statement from the event’s organisers was put out on Sunday. It said: “Luke Davenport is currently in intensive care in an induced coma, and is in a serious but stable condition, with multiple chest injuries, lung damage, broken right leg, broken pelvis, broken right arm and concussion.

“We would like to thank the BTCC Medical Team, marshals, Croft Circuit staff, Air Ambulance crews and all staff at James Cook Hospital.

“Everyone within the BTCC sends their best wishes to all three drivers for a speedy and full recovery.”

Qualifying was stopped following the accident.

Fellow Cambridge driver Rob Huff was also involved in an accident during a race at the weekend, but he escaped with just a bruised arm.

Huff’s car turned over multiple times following a puncture which sent the car into a wall at 130mph during the race at Salzburgring.

Elsewhere, Michael Caine’s Autoaid/RCIB Insurance Racing team had a frustrating weekend in the British GT Championship.

The team finished in lowly positions in the qualifying, the two free practice and main race itself. The team finished bottom of the main race standings after completing just 34 laps.

Cambridge graduate Oliver Turvey managed two respectable finishes in both Berlin e-Prix races at the weekend. He finished 10th in Saturday’s first race and ninth on Sunday.

In cricket, Cambridge Granta cruised to an easy victory over Norwich at the weekend. Norwich managed just 110 all out while Granta reached 114 for two to win by eight wickets.

In the Whiting & Partners Division 1, only Foxton managed to win and there were wins for Sawston & Babraham and Great Shelford in Division 2.

In the CCA Senior League Divisions, there were wins for Abingdon and Foxton seconds (Division 1), Cambourne (Division 2) and Cherry Hinton (Division 3).

In the CCA Cambridge News 20/20 Walker Cup, Girton, the Fulbourn Institute and Histon seconds were among those who won on Sunday.

In American football, the Cambridgeshire Cats’ winning streak came to an end as they lost against the London Hornets on Sunday.

In rugby league, the Cambridge Lions suffered their third straight defeat on Saturday as they went down 26-16 against King’s Lynn.

In men’s football, former Cambridge manager Herve Renard took his Morocco side to Cameroon for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday.

But Morocco lost 1-0 thanks to a goal from Vincent Aboubakar. Cameroon have already qualified as hosts, but have been assigned a group to give them guaranteed friendlies.

Another former Cambridge manager, Claude Le Roy, travelled with his Togo side to Algeria for a qualifier on Sunday night (GMT), but they also lost 1-0.

Former Cambridge goalkeeper Jesse Joronen was named in Finland’s squad for their World Cup qualifier against Ukraine, but was an unused substitute.

Cambridge United’s under-nine’s have become European champions after winning the recent Fahrmeisteri Cup.

They came out of a tough group unbeaten and saw off Bochum, Cologne and Mainz to lift the trophy.

In futsal, Cambridge United’s under-19 side have been crowned champions of the EFL Trust Futsal Midlands League One and will contest the finals on June 21st.

And in footgolf, three local players helped the United Kingdom to victory in the inaugural FootGolf Jansen Cup.

Andy Peck, Jamie Cullum and Charlotte O’Gara from the Cambridge FootGolf Centre in Milton were involved.

Securing the future of Community Radio

Cambridge Radio is the Community broadcaster for Cambridge and South Cambs.

Our brief is to give a voice to those sometimes excluded from traditional media. And the presenters you hear on air are all volunteers themselves who give up their time for free. We do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too.

If everyone who listens to our shows, our podcasts, the businesses we feature, helps to pay for it, our future would be much more secure.

You can support Cambridge Radio by giving monthly or by making a one-off contribution.
