The Local Roundup

Daniel Baker has a look at some of the local sports from around the region.

In men’s rugby union, several current and former Cambridge stars helped the England Counties beat Spain 45-28 on Saturday.

England Counties, who are also coached by Cambridge University’s James Shanahan, survived a Spanish fightback to record a solid victory.

Current Cambridge players Dan Seal and Albert Portsmouth and ex-Cambridge stars James Stokes and Tom Wheatcroft played their part in Guadalajara.

After a tough first half, Spain rallied and got the score down to 38-28. But a late try from Harry Bate and conversion from Matthew Shephard sealed the win.

Portsmouth was among those who contributed to England’s points tally with a first half try.

On Thursday night, ex-Cambridge star Alex Goode helped the Barbarians beat Ulster in Belfast. The Baa-Baas won 43-28 and Goode was in the starting XV.

Goode, who now plays for Saracens, is a former pupil at St Faith’s School on Trumpington Road and the Leys School.

In men’s rugby league, the Cambridge Lions suffered a huge defeat on Sunday against the MK Wolves at Sawston.

There were only six points in it at the break with Cambridge trailing 10-4, but the Wolves registered 46 unanswered points to win 56-4.

The Lions, who lost to Luton in their opening game, will be hoping to make it third time lucky when they take on King’s Lynn next weekend.

In men’s cricket, Cambridge Granta came unstuck against the Vauxhall Mallards at the weekend. Chasing down 220 to win in their all-day game, Granta managed just 138 for 8.

In the Whiting & Partners Division 1, there were wins for Foxton and Waresley, but Histon lost. In Division 2, Cambridge St Giles and Sawston & Babraham won.

In the CCA Senior League Division 1, it was a clean sweep for our teams with wins for Abingdon, Fordham, Foxton seconds and Cambridge NCI.

In Division 2, Histon seconds, Longstanton and the Old Leysians all won and in Division 3, Cherry Hinton were the only one of our sides to win.

In men’s football, two former Cambridge United managers took charge of their countries in international friendlies recently.

Herve Renard’s Morocco lost 2-1 to the Netherlands while Claude Le Roy, who now manages Togo, saw his side go down 3-0 against Nigeria.

In snooker, Cambridge’s Neil Robertson is due to play Gerard Greene in a China Championship qualifier on Tuesday. Find out how the Australian does on Cambridge 105 this week.

Securing the future of Community Radio

Cambridge Radio is the Community broadcaster for Cambridge and South Cambs.

Our brief is to give a voice to those sometimes excluded from traditional media. And the presenters you hear on air are all volunteers themselves who give up their time for free. We do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too.

If everyone who listens to our shows, our podcasts, the businesses we feature, helps to pay for it, our future would be much more secure.

You can support Cambridge Radio by giving monthly or by making a one-off contribution.
