In men’s football, two former Cambridge United players suffered Wembley heartache in the final of the FA Vase on Sunday.
Peter Winn and Matt Bloomer turned out for Cleethorpes Town against South Shields, but were on the wrong end of a 4-0 hiding. Cambridge’s Mark Wilson was also an assistant referee on the day.
Meanwhile, former Cambridge City striker Neil Harris led Millwall to victory in the League One play-off final on Saturday. His assistant is ex-Histon man David Livermore.
And Comberton United also secured their third trophy of the season at the weekend after seeing off Great Chishill in the final of the Fosters Cup.
In women’s football, Comberton United and Riverside Rovers’ under-15’s were involved in a six-goal thriller at the weekend. The game ended 3-3.
Bar Hill also beat Newmarket 8-3 in the under-14 A league on a weekend where goals were flying in left, right and centre.
In American football, the Cambridgeshire Cats registered their fourth straight league win on Sunday. The Cats beat the Colchester Gladiators 28-6 in Essex.
In futsal, Cambridge United came agonisingly close to pulling off an astonishing comeback against London Helvecia on Sunday.
The teams met in the second leg of their play-off quarter final in the capital and United needed to win by five clear goals to progress to the semi-finals after losing the first leg 7-3.
Despite leading 5-1 at one stage, Helvecia pulled it back to 5-5 and progressed 12-8 on aggregate to end United’s season.
In motorsport, Cambridge’s Luke Davenport managed a top-10 finish in his third race at Oulton Park in the British Touring Cars Championship.
Davenport took part in the event at the weekend and despite finishing at the lower end of the scale in qualifying, he finished 18th in race one and 17th in race two.
Cambridge graduate Oliver Turvey finished 11th in the Paris e Prix at the weekend. He was demoted to a starting place of 14th after he changed a motor in one of his cars.
In cricket, Cambridge Granta suffered their second consecutive defeat in the East Anglian Premier League on Saturday.
Granta bowled first and opponents Swardeston hit 243 for 8 off their 50 overs, but Granta fell short in their run chase and reached just 176.
Jonny Atkinson’s half-century wasn’t enough and Joe Gatting, nephew of England legend Mike, took three wickets and a catch for Swardeston.
In the CCA Senior League Division 1, Foxton seconds and Fordham won. In Division 2, there were wins for Hardwick & Caldecote, the Old Leysians and Longstanton and in Division 3, Fordham seconds won.
In the Whiting & Partners Division 1, Foxton and Histon’s games were abandoned and Waresley lost. In Division 2, Great Shelford lost and all our other team’s games were abandoned.
In rugby union, the Eastern Counties suffered their third consecutive defeat in the Bill Beaumont Cup as they went down 61-15 against Yorkshire in Hull.
Ten of the 15 starters represented either Shelford, Cambridge or Cambridge University and three of the seven replacements also came from one of our local teams.
Shelford stars Tom Jackson and Tuli Paea scored tries in the game, but Fraser Gillies, of Cambridge University, and Simon Hrbeck, of Shelford, both missed conversions.
The Eastern Counties were still in the game at half-time despite trailing 19-15, but then Yorkshire hit 42 unanswered points in the second period to wrap up a huge win.
In bowls, the Cambridge and District Bowls League Lacon competition was due to take place on Saturday evening.
And in darts, the Cambridgeshire Ladies Gold Cup Singles and Pairs event was due to be held on Sunday.
