Daniel Baker has a look at some of the local sports from around the region.
In horse riding, Cambridge University’s Equestrian first team beat Oxford in the 2017 Varsity fixture at the Royal Windsor Horse Show at the weekend.
In martial arts, Cambridge University’s Jiu-Jitsu Club also came out on top against Oxford in their weekend Varsity clash to make it back-to-back wins in the fixture.
In motorsport, several drivers from Cambridge or with connections to the city were in action at the weekend including Cambridge graduate Oliver Turvey who finished 13th in the Monaco E Prix race.
Elsewhere, city driver Rob Huff was in pole position going into the Hungarian leg of the World Touring Car Championship on Sunday.
But the race was overshadowed somewhat by an incident which saw him collide with fellow driver Nicky Catsburg who then crashed into Nestor Girolami.
Huff was given a drive-through penalty following the incident and accepted responsibility for what had happened. But he did record the fastest lap of the race despite the fact he didn’t win overall.
Cambridge Autograss Club were also in action too in the National Qualifying Race 3 at Stretham at the weekend.
In cricket, Cambridge Granta suffered their first defeat of the season as their 100 per cent winning start ended at the hands of Sudbury.
The Suffolk side were set a target of 200 to win after Granta made 199-9 off their 50 overs. But Sudbury reached 201 for 4 to record a six-wicket victory.
Elswhere, the Cambridge University Blues demolished the Free Foresters on Sunday. The Blues won by 103 runs as their opponents fell woefully short of reaching their target of 229.
Cambridgeshire CCC were also in action, but they drew with Cumberland in the Unicorns Trophy on Sunday.
In the Whiting and Partners Division 1, Foxton were the only one of our sides to win and in Division 2, Great Shelford were the only one of our sides to emerge victorious.
In the CCA Senior League Divisions, four of our teams won at the weekend. They were Abingdon (Division 1), Cambourne and the Old Leysians (Division 2) and Cottenham (Division 3).
In rugby league, the Cambridge Lions threw away a 16-point lead to lose 34-30 to the Luton Vipers on the opening weekend of their season.
Cambridge led 20-4 at the break, but their opponents had clearly listened to their half-time team talk and stole the victory.
In women’s football, Cambridge United Women ended their season in disappointing fashion with a 2-0 home defeat against the Milton Keynes Dons.
Their Reserves lost 3-2 at home to Netherton, but the treble winners had already secured the Women’s Premierships prior to kick-off. Cambridge University beat Bar Hill by a walkover in the same league.
In rugby union, the men’s Eastern Counties side lost for the second consecutive week as they went down 38-15 against Lancashire.
The Eastern Counties starting 15 featured 13 players from either Cambridge, Cambridge University or Shelford and five of the seven replacements were from one of our three local sides.
The Eastern Counties had led 15-12 at half-time and Simon Hrbeck’s penalty, conversion and stunning solo try helped them to build a strong lead.
But Lancashire’s half-time team talk paid off as they hit an unanswered and healthy 26 points in the second half to wrap up an impressive win.
And in athletics, Cambridge and Oxford were also in Varsity action at the weekend in the 143rd competition between the universities.
