@danielbaker1992 has a look at some of the local sports from around the region.
In women’s football, Cambridge United Ladies went down 2-1 at Enfield in the A10 derby. Cambridge went a goal down after the interval and despite an equaliser from Dawn Mallet, they fell behind again and were unable to recover.
United’s reserves, though, came out on top in the Cambridge derby against the University of Cambridge in the League Cup. Lucy Gateson’s winner gave them a 1-0 win and a place in the semi-finals to boot.
In the Cambridgeshire Women’s Premiership, Bar Hill went down 2-0 at Newmarket.
In other games, Milton bounced back from their 19-0 trouncing against Cambridge United in their last game by beating Orton Rangers 11-1 in their Championship South game. In the same division, the Fulbourn Bluebirds were hammered 4-0 by Cambridge City’s development side. Isleham Ladies also beat Cambridge Rangers by the same scoreline.
In men’s football, Cambridge City Reserves fared somewhat better than the first team by beating Hemingford United 3-2. Chris Racher, Josh Lowe and Stephan Sarpong were all on target in Saturday’s win.
In rugby union, Cambridge RUFC recovered from last weekend’s defeat at Esher with a crucial away win at Fylde. They came back from 7-0 down to win 46-28 and survived a mini fightback by their Lancashire opposition. Their second team also won at the weekend after seeing off Ely 26-12 in the cup.
Shelford threw away a 7-0 lead as they went down 50-19 against the Tonbridge Juddians. Tuli Paea’s try & Josh Simmons’ conversion had put them 7-0 up, but they found themselves 17-14 down by the 27th minute and Charlie Baker’s late try could only reduce the arrears.
In men’s hockey, there were mixed results for Cambridge’s team on Saturday. Cambridge City’s teams managed a win, a draw and 4 defeats in their six matches with the heaviest of their four defeats a 9-1 reverse against UEA 1sts. It was a clean sweep for the Cambridge Nomads as all three of their sides won while Cambridge South’s teams managed a draw and three wins in their four matches. Cambridge University were winless with two draws and a defeat.
On Thursday, the University of Cambridge’s second side beat Anglia Ruskin 1sts 3-0 in the league to keep up their 100 per cent record of nine games and nine wins.
In women’s hockey, goals were the order of the day in some of the matches involving our teams. Cambridge City’s teams managed three wins and a draw including their fifth team’s impressive 12-0 win against Newmarket fourths. The Nomads could only manage a draw and a defeat in their two games. Cambridge South’s three teams achieved two wins and a defeat with their biggest win a 13-0 triumph by their first team against Newmarket seconds. Cambridge University suffered three 5-0 defeats with their first, second and third sides losing by the same scoreline.
And in basketball, the University of Cambridge seconds were due to take on Bedford seconds in the league on Monday.
