Greg and Darren dedicate this weeks edition of the Kipper the Cat show on Cambridge 105 to the musical comedy genius of Stan Freberg who died earlier this month at the age of 88. Stan who grew up in Los Angeles was a major influence on the work of people like Dr. Demento, Weird Al Yankovic and Bob Rivers and is credited as being the father of the “funny TV commercial”. His observational sketches and pop music parodies of the hits of the day in the 1950s created a new genre of music as he took a sideways look at the work of such performers as The Platters, Harry Belafonte, Elvis Presley, and even Lonnie Donegan. In the show we play both the original songs side by side with some of Stan’s versions of the same all from the original 78rpm records.
