An incredible spectacle at Super Bowl LI as The Patriots secure a fifth Super Bowl win and make history in coming back from the greatest point deficit in its 51 year history. Full disclosure, I did not watch the game because, quite ironically, I did not want to deprive myself of sleep to watch what I assumed to be another convincing Patriots win.
The Patriots were down by 25 points in the 3rd quarter but managed to pull level by the end of the game to 28-28, forcing the first ever overtime in Super Bowl history. It was here that the Patriots secured their victory with a stunning 2 yard drive from running back James White, who entered the Super Bowl record books himself, scoring 20 points from 3 touchdowns and a conversion. The key to the Patriots comeback however, lies with Tom Brady and his magic right arm, he can now place a Super Bowl ring on every finger. He broke every record in the book last night, throwing 466 passing yards resulting in 43 completions, he is the first quarterback to win 5 Superbowls. While he has suffered controversy both on and off the pitch, the 39 year old has surpassed all of his peers and younger contemporaries and is arguably the greatest player of all time.
For the Atlanta Falcons this loss will leave a very bitter taste, this was the only the second time the team managed to reach the Super Bowl and is a team that have suffered more losses than defeats. Coming into the game with the NFL MVP Matt Ryan and explosive wide receiver Julio Jones hopes would have been high, and indeed going into half time 21-3 up victory looked all but certain. This just goes to show the one thing that no team in the NFL should ever forget: Tom Brady.
