The Olympic Torch Relay 2012
This weekend join Cambridge 105 for live coverage of the Cambridge section of the Olympic Torch Relay. We will have live, up-to-the-minute reports and interviews as the torch relay and Olympic flame pass through our city. Coverage starts at 5pm on Saturday evening and continues at 6am on Sunday morning.
Torchbearers:
The Torchbearers for Cambridge on the 7th of July are Aimee Yates (21), Christine Illman (62), Alister Rayment (21), Iwan Thomas (38), Mark Reynolds (26), Holly Greenwood (13), Neil Adams (26), Tanya Lubicz-Nawrocka (26), Tony Burton (36) and Zhiyong Pan (35).
Carrying the torch through Cambridge on the 8th of July are Alice Ellison (18), Angela Taylor (53), Ed Roberts (26), Francesca Jones (21), Gary Johnson (43), Kim Manchett (30) and Lydia Backhaus (18).
The Olympic Torch Relay Route for Saturday 7th July 2012
Route:
On Saturday 7th July, the Olympic Torch will be carried west along Newmarket Road (A1303), turning left into Barnwell Road and Brooks Road (A1134) at approx 6:00pm, before turning right to make its final approach to the city centre along Mill Road.
The Flame will then make its way through the waiting crowds on Parker’s Piece to the Celebration Stage, for the ceremonial lighting of the Olympic cauldron, launching an evening of celebration to mark the Olympic Flame’s arrival – a highlight of the City Council’s Big Weekend.
Early on the morning of Sunday 8th July, the Flame will make its appearance in Great Court, Trinity College, to participate in the famous Great Court Run. The Flame will then depart along the River Cam by punt, disembarking by Magdalene Bridge. From here it will be carried north out of the city via Magdalene Street, Castle Street and Huntingdon Road (A1307).
Travel recommendations for the weekend:
With around 25,000 people expected to welcome the Olympic Torch onto Parkers Piece on Saturday 7th July, the city’s award winning Park & Ride Service is going to be running late into the night to help get people home. To reduce the potential for congestion in the city centre, extra services will be running to the Trumpington and Milton Park & Ride sites from 8pm onwards. These are…
Trumpington: 20:06, 20:16, 20:26, 20:36, 20:56, 21:16, 21:36, 21:56, 22:16, 22:36, 22:56 and 23:16.
Milton: 20:01, 20:11, 20:21, 20:31, 20:41, 20:51, 21:11, 21:31, 21:51, 22:11, 22:31, 22:51 and 23:11.
The Trumpington service leaves from Downing Street and the Milton service leaves from the D2 stop on Drummer Street. These additional services will help people to leave their cars outside the city to avoid rolling road closures which will be in place along the Olympic Torch Relay route as well as the closure of Mill Road to traffic from East Road to Coleridge Road from mid afternoon to approximately 8pm.
If you are driving into Cambridge, you are advised to plan your journey in advance. Car parks in the city centre are expected to get very congested and there will be parking restrictions on the streets along the main torch route. If you are planning on driving into Cambridge, you are advised to check the Cambridge Traffic Manager Team Twitter feed for real-time travel updates.
Roads along the route will be temporarily closed approx 10 to 15 minutes ahead of the Torch arriving and opened again approx 30 minutes after it has passed.
River Cam:
The River Cam will be closed to the public from Garrett Hotel Bridge to Magdalene Bridge from 12am-7:30am on Sunday 8th July.
Relay Freebies:
The advance convoy vehicles at the front of the procession will pass down the designated routes before the torch bearer convoy itself. The convoy vehicles will be handing out promotional materials to the crowd lining the route from the left hand side only. Viewing of the procession is recommended from that side of the route.
