Our friend and colleague Nick Skelton (DJ Skunk) has died at the age of 69 after a long-term illness.
In his last months Nick often prepared his shows in hospital and even recorded them while still on the ward, showing dedication to his music, and the station.
Nick’s programme ClubGlobal was a regular in the Cambridge 105 Radio schedules since we began in July 2010. Before that Nick was heard on our predecessor 209 Radio.
When Cambridge 105 Radio picked up the city’s community radio licence his carpentry skills helped construct the Gwydir Street Studios.
The world music that Nick played had been inspired by nights at The Boat Race on East Road, where he spent time listening to the likes of Ivo Papasov and the Bhundu Boys.
As a live DJ Nick performed at La Raza and Café Africa.
An environmentalist, Nick produced a series of programmes for Cambridge 105 Radio called The 7th Generation, he was also a supporter of Extinction Rebellion and was passionate about protecting the planet for future generations. “For My Grandchildren” reads a banner on a picture of Nick shown on his Facebook page.
We’ll miss ClubGlobal and look forward to broadcasting a tribute show at Christmas.
