Thunderstorm
Tuesday May 14–Saturday May 18
£10.00 – £17.00“All is submerged in the ruthless well of the cosmos.”
Thirty years ago, Zhou Puyuan, the son of the Zhou family, engaged in a secret romantic relationship with his maid, Lu Shiping, but soon abandoned her. Three decades later, by chance, Shiping’s daughter came to work for the Zhou family again. On a hot summer day, the aged and life-wearied Shiping returned to the familiar Zhou residence to look for her daughter. She recognized Zhou Puyuan, and discovered her daughter had fallen in love with Zhou Puyuan’s son, Zhou Ping. That night, as a thunderstorm erupted, the wheels of ruthless fate began to turn, and a moment of reckoning approached.
In this ancient Chinese family, there existed someone powerful yet vulnerable, someone trapped by love yet bold. Madness and foolishness coexist. Repressed love and intense hatred intertwined.
Thunderstorm is not merely one of the most influential tragedies in the history of modern Chinese theatre, but also a poem of love and desire. This adaptation and production aim to bring a poetic presentation to the audience with new visual imagery and digital installations.
This production is suitable for ages 16 and over.
