Robert Schumann – String Quartet no 1 in A minor, op 41 no 1/ Sally Beamish – Nine Fragments (String Quartet no 4)/ Felix Mendelssohn – String Quartet no 2 in A minor, op 13
The Elias String Quartet have quickly established themselves as one of the most intense and vibrant quartets of their generation. Formed in 1998 at the Royal Northern College of Music, they are now ensemble in residence at the RNCM. The Quartet is steadily building a recording catalogue that has been met with widespread critical acclaim.
Schumann’s first quartet has long been a personal favourite of the Elias Quartet. Highly charged, joyful and poignant, it is rewarding for both performers and listeners alike. Sally Beamish’s ‘Nine Fragments’ was written for the Elias Quartet as a companion piece to Schumann’s first quartet. Their programme ends with Mendelssohn’s String Quartet no 2; an astonishingly individual response to the late Beethoven quartets, characterised by soaring melodies, stormy power and shimmering flurries.
Tickets £24 / £12 (under 25).
