Perimeter – Exhibition by Ian Rawlinson
Monday October 2, 2023–Sunday October 29, 2023
Ian Rawlinson’s recent exhibitions dealt with ideas of place and memory, unearthing transitional places from his past. During the past ten years he has produced a large body of work inspired by his hometown of Cambridge.
Perimemter presents a new series of works inspired by places and memories of North West Norfolk. Aspects of the work hint at East Anglia’s military past, something Rawlinson closely associates with the area surrounding his childhood h ome. Other images depict remnants connected with past and present-day visits to Norfolk, using the idea of a threshold or juncture where the two timelines meet.
The new work blends these ideas with abstracted forms, juxtaposing places and structures with void shapes and redactive features. This return to elements of abstraction brings together two different ways of working, where the ‘memory-laden aspect of place’ morphs with dark intrusions.
