Cambridgeshire Police are launching a major policing operation this weekend as the Olympic Torch arrives in the City.
The Torch is due to arrive in Cambridge tomorrow evening (July 7th) as part of its 70-day tour around the UK.
Around 120 police officers, PCSOs and Specials will take part in the operation to support the local authority and LOCOG (London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games).
“Our policing operation is in place to support LOCOG and the local authorities to maintain public safety during the Torch visit,” said chief inspector Mike Williams “This is a community event and it is important the focus remains on the celebration of this sporting event. Our operation will be effective and robust, yet it will remain proportionate and wherever possible discreet.”
Responsibility for the security of the Olympic Torch is provided by the Metropolitan Police who supply an inner cordon of protection around the flame and torchbearer.
