Cambridge Radio has won five honours at the 2025 Community Radio Awards, including Gold for its coverage of women’s sport.
The judges said Women’s Sports Mix, produced and presented by Alex Elbro and Amy Gray, was “more than a generic sports show with a wider health and wellbeing reach. The variety of coverage and the way that the presenters get involved shows real dedication”.
Silver went to Habbin the Night of Our Lives, Daniel Baker’s documentary feature on Cambridge United’s 2015 FA Cup shock against Manchester United. Ten years on, Cambridge Radio spoke to players and supporters about one of Cambridge United’s best-ever matches.
Cambridge Radio also received Silver for its coverage of the 2024 Cambridge Folk Festival. Cambridge Radio produced more than 20 hours of audio and video programming from Cherry Hinton Hall, with live performances and artist interviews from the Cambridge Radio outside broadcast van and backstage studio. Presenters Steffi Callister, Julian Clover, Alex Elbro, Lucy Milazzo, Linda Ness and Les Ray were supported backstage by technical team Rob Chipperfield, Lawrence Micalief and Dom Smith.
Two further Silver awards went to Amy Gray (Presenter of the Year, Woman) and Gavin Richards (Presenter of the Year, Man).
Amy presents a Friday evening show focusing on the music of the 1990s and early 2000s, while Gavin can be heard on Saturday mornings and in a monthly interview show about the work of Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust.
The awards were presented at a ceremony in Bradford on Saturday 25 October 2025.
Julian Clover, Editorial Lead at Cambridge Radio, said: “One of the roles of community radio is to cover areas that are sometimes under-represented in mainstream media. It’s fantastic to have Alex and Amy’s efforts in women’s sport locally recognised.
“Habbin the Night of Our Lives, which takes its name from the famous Abbey stand, reflects the importance even a goalless draw can have in a football campaign. Daniel was able to perfectly capture the moment and what it meant to Cambridge United players and supporters alike
“Cambridge Folk Festival has been our biggest outside broadcast this year and continues to play a major part in the community. We’re looking forward to being part of the festival when it returns in 2026.
“Many congratulations to Amy and Gavin, who produce highly professional programmes without losing sight of the local audience we serve.”
