Cambridge Radio launches from Gwydir Street Studios

• Mayor of Cambridge Cllr Baiju Thittala joins celebrations
• Bands move from Mill Road Winter Fair to Gwydir Street
• First programme presented by Julian Clover & Lucy Milazzo

Cambridge Radio became the new name for community radio in Cambridge and South Cambs on Saturday (9 October).

The radio station, previously known as Cambridge 105 Radio, continues to broadcast on Digital Radio, Online, the free Radioplayer app and 105 FM. Several podcasts are also available from major providers and include Flavour, From the Terraces, Women’s Sports Mix, Cambs Politics and Cambridge Film Show.

The new Cambridge Radio name went live at 11.00 with presenters Julian Clover and Lucy Milazzo introduced guests Mayor of Cambridge Cllr Baiju Thittala, Waterbeach Brass and Jethro Scorcher, landlord of the Cambridge Blue, who told listeners he was going ahead with his Mill Road Winter Fair plans, despite the event being cancelled.

Storm Darragh led to Cambridge Radio’s planned line-up of local musicians including Melody Coles, Datum Plane and Josh Robins performing in the Cambridge Radio Green Room rather than on Donkey Common.

A new set of jingles has been produced by Devaweb at Media City in Salford. The voice actors are Cambridgeshire-based Pete Cousins, a familiar voice to Cambridge Radio listeners, and London-based Gina Melotte.

Lucy Milazzo will continue to be heard on station promos.

A new logo has been created by local freelance designer, Gina Taylor, based in Northstowe. The design continues to use the familiar green colour, but with a new logotype.

Presenters Julian Clover and Lucy Milazzo said: “It was fantastic to welcome in the new name with such a fantastic range of Cambridge talent. We look forward to continuing to give Cambridge a voice right across our schedule”.

Greg Butler, Director Cambridge Radio said: “While we were disappointed that Mill Road Winter Fair was cancelled this year, we were pleased to be able to host all the acts we’d planned at our Gwydir Street studios. I’d like to thank them for coming to play for us and our wonderful volunteers for the hard work they put in to make it happen”.

Securing the future of Community Radio

Cambridge Radio is the Community broadcaster for Cambridge and South Cambs.

Our brief is to give a voice to those sometimes excluded from traditional media. And the presenters you hear on air are all volunteers themselves who give up their time for free. We do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too.

If everyone who listens to our shows, our podcasts, the businesses we feature, helps to pay for it, our future would be much more secure.

You can support Cambridge Radio by giving monthly or by making a one-off contribution.
