Provocative Historical Figures – Talk

Thursday September 29, 2022

£5.00 – £8.00

Wednesday, 28 September historians Dr Joanne Paul and Dr Estelle Paranque will discussthe audacity and ambition, calculation and power of these provocative historical figures.

In The House of Dudley, Paul traces the Dudley line through the Tudor succession while Paranque explores the rivalry between Elizabeth I and Catherine de Medici in Blood, Fire and Gold.

Placed side by side, these new books put flesh on the bones of the women who lived in treacherous times.

Dr Joanne Paul is a Renaissance and Early Modern Historical at University Sussex. In 2017, she was selected to be one of the ten BBC/AHRC New Generation Thinkers. In The House of Dudley, Paul draws on overlooked archival materials and uncovered documents that reveal lesser-known members of the family, particularly women, to cast the whole family – and their history-making impact – in a new light.

Dr Estelle Paranque is an Assistant Professor in History at NCH at Northeastern University. She has participated in several international historical documentaries including BBC Two’s The Boleyns: A Scandalous Family. In Blood, Fire and Gold, Paranque tells the story of two remarkable visionaries: Elizabeth I and Catherine de Medici.
