Local station wins in four of five of its nominated categories

Cambridge 105 Radio has won in four categories at the Community Radio Awards, placing it in joint lead for the number of awards received.

Virtual Strawberry Fair, made with the assistance of volunteers from the Midsummer Common event, won Gold for ‘Arts & Creative Radio of the Year’ and Silver for ‘Live Event or Outside Broadcast of the Year’. Veteran presenter Tony Barnfield won Gold as ‘Sage Person of the Year’, while Impact, a documentary on first world war brain injuries made by Leigh Chambers with the Cambridge-based charity Headway received Bronze in the ‘Community Show of the Year’ category.

The award comes at the end of a successful year for Cambridge 105 Radio with presenters broadcasting from their homes amid the coronavirus restrictions.

The station also achieved Silver at the Audio Production Awards for Virtual Strawberry Fair.

Virtual Strawberry Fair producer and Cambridge 105 Radio presenter & director, Trevor Dann said: “These awards are a tribute to the hard work and creativity of Cambridge 105 Radio’s volunteers. They shine a light on the valuable contribution the station makes to an underserved radio and online audience. The team’s dedication during the pandemic has been remarkable and it’s a privilege to work with them.”

Sage Person of the Year winner, Cambridge 105 Radio presenter Tony Barnfield said: “I am utterly surprised and delighted to receive an award for what I have loved doing for a lifetime, especially over the last few months, broadcasting from home and using new technology to produce news bulletins and programmes.”
