Cambridge105 Does Comic Relief.
Sara Woo-Sam, 21st March 2011
On Friday the 18th March, Red Nose Day saw Cambridge105 take to the city for the station’s first outside broadcast. While Neil, attired in his pyjamas, held the fort back at the station, Sara, Helen, Tim, Axel, Chris and Tom from 105’s news team, with the assistance of Rob and Lawrence from the Cambridgeshire Repeater Group, broadcast from locations around the city.
Proceedings kicked off at The Junction at Cambridge Leisure Park. The team set up outside and were joined by local band Total Emergency for a live set at the venue. All enjoyed the street side entertainment and by midday it was time to move on to the next location in the heart of the city centre in Sidney Street.
With Sara and Helen suitably dressed as Red Nose Day fairies the team entertained shoppers, taking donations in exchange for song requests. The entertainment was varied, with a set by The Abstracts followed by some unique renditions of red-themed songs on kazoos and swanee-whistles by the team. Tim led the outside broadcast, while throughout the day Sara and Helen dropped in to local businesses to report on how people had been raising money in aid of Comic Relief. Activities ranged from fashion shows put on by schools in conjunction with the retailers in the Grafton Centre, to good old favourites, which saw store managers taking a dip in a bath of tinned tomatoes.
Late afternoon, the team arrived at its final location at Cambridge Beehive. Interviews were conducted live on drivetime, with staff from the businesses at the retail park. Listeners tuned in to hear reports on a diverse range of fundraising activities. For staff at Home Sense, Friday marked the end of a fundraising marathon which had included punting in fancy dress and finding ways to pass a ‘liberty’ bag between all the stores nationwide. Other events included a Fame themed launch party at DW Sports Fitness Club and ’round to the pound’ scheme at Pets At Home.
At the end of a successful day of broadcast, Cambridge105 FM raised a grand total of £340.81 in aid of Comic Relief.
