Elégie: Rachmaninov – A Heart in Exile
Sunday February 26, 2023
£11.00 – £22.00Lucy Parham, piano/ Henry Goodman, narrator/ Scripted by Lucy Parham
In the year of his 150th anniversary, Elégie vividly tells Rachmaninov’s story in music and words. The narrative is scripted from letters and diaries, following Rachmaninov from his youth in Russia, through his subsequent self-imposed exile and finally to California USA, where he died in 1943. The performance incorporates some of his best-loved music for solo piano: Preludes, Etudes-Tableaux and Moments Musicaux, together with the haunting Elégie and complementary pieces by Scriabin and Tchaikovsky.
One of Britain’s finest pianists, Lucy Parham applies her imagination and sensitivity not only to concertos and recitals, but to the creation of her widely-acclaimed composer portraits of Schumann, Rachmaninov, Chopin, Liszt and Debussy. In Elégie, she is joined by esteemed actor Henry Goodman (Foyle’s War, Yes Prime Minister) who narrates the story from the perspective of Sergei Rachmaninov himself.
