SUMMARY:Michael Palin - There and Back. The Diary Tour
DESCRIPTION:Best-selling author and comedy legend Michael Palin is going back on the road! \nTen years since his last published diary\, Michael unlocks volume four of his life and times\, from 1999 to 2009. As the centuries change and Michael heads into middle age\, he’s busier than ever. In this new show\, with the help of rarely seen photos and video\, Michael brings these momentous times to life as he talks through this latest Diary to take us backstage on this most productive decade of his life\, whilst always\, in the background\, showing us the wider world\, one of infinite possibilities and new and unimagined dangers. \nHe takes on four new travel series\, and a wide variety of documentaries from art and artists to the last day of the First World War. He watches his family grow and expand at a time of ominous new threats and dangers. The Twin Towers fall\, bombs blast London\, banks collapse\, whole economies teeter on the brink. Tony Blair offers hope with the Good Friday agreement\, then embroils us in Iraq. \nMichael enters his 60s\, and finds grown-up responsibilities come his way. By the end of this diary\, he’s in his first year as President of the Royal Geographical Society. His diary reflects his constant struggle against routine and repetition\, and his irresistible and often nerve-shredding attraction to new challenges. Some work\, some don’t\, but by the end of this volume he’s reached the retirement age of 65. And he’s planning a new journey. \nTickets: £42.50. All tickets include a £3 booking fee \nFor info go to cambridgelive.org.uk

SUMMARY:Exhibition by Ian Rawlinson
DESCRIPTION:REFRACTOR is an exploration of collective memory as seen through East Anglia’s military past\, an idea which grew out of Rawlinson’s memories of the area surrounding his childhood home in Cambridge\, where an abandoned World War II army depot was used as farmland. \nThe new work is inspired by connections to places and structures in North West Norfolk. Prints and collages reflect Rawlinson’s interest in the effect of decaying concrete and the buildings’ ability to retain the iconography of their former function despite their dereliction. He adds intrusions and abstractions to the images\, drawing out the notion that these places are portals where different timelines meet. \nThe work is presented at the Edge Café\, situated on the Brookfields Hospital site on Mill Road\, Cambridge. The Edge Café is a community café and social enterprise working as a hub for recovery and positive change in Cambridge. \nBorn in Cambridge\, Ian Rawlinson grew up in the city during the 1960s and 1970s. He studied art at Cambridge College of Art & Technology (now Anglia Ruskin University) and left Cambridge in 1982 to further his studies at Winchester School of Art and the Royal College of Art. Since 1985 he has lived and worked in London. To date his work has been shown in many group and solo exhibitions both in the UK and internationally and is held in public and private collections. He was recently elected an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers \nFor more info e-mail ian@ianrawlinson.com
