In snooker, Cambridge-based Neil Robertson saw his UK Championship dreams shattered on Monday night as he lost a thrilling encounter against Mark Joyce.
The Australian had seen off Ken Doherty and Rod Lawler to set up the third round clash with Joyce, but lost by six frames to five.
In football, Cambridge United were dumped out of the FA Cup Second Round by Newport County on Sunday courtesy of two goals from Joss Labadie.
Histon were hammered 5-1 by Newmarket Town despite taking the lead early on, but there was better news for Cambridge City who thrashed Aylesbury United 6-1 away from home.
It’s as you were at the top of the Kershaw Premier Division as Callum Harrison brace helped leaders West Wratting beat Sawston United 4-0 and second place Great Shelford won 4-1 at home to Gamlingay United with Tom Barham grabbing two for the hosts. Foxton moved off the foot of the table at the expense of Gamlingay as they picked up a point in a 3-3 draw with Comberton United.
Brampton still sit in third as they won 5-1 at Cherry Hinton with Martin Turner grabbing two goals. Cambridge City Development won away 3-1 at Cambridge University Press, to give themselves some day light between them and the bottom two.
Asher Wilson grabbed a hat-trick as Fowlmere moved back to the top of Kershaw Senior A as they won 4-1 against Haverhill Borough Reserves and Over Sports were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Somersham Town. Milton also leapfrogged Over into second place as they won 3-2 at Hundon, thanks to a Dylan Lomas brace.
Ely City Reserves put themselves back in the promotion picture, winning 3-1 at Bar Hill, Scott Callaghan grabbing a couple. Adam Clements grabbed a hat-trick for Soham United as the won 4-3 at Fulbourn Institute Reserves. Cottenham United moved off the foot of the table at the expense of Fulbourn as they won their first game of the season 3-1 at home to Soham Town Rangers Reserves, the goals coming from Edward George and Josh Parker.
Huntingdon United remain top of Senior B as the defeated bottom club and neighbours Godmanchester Rovers Reserves 2-1. Red Lodge are still second as they overcame neighbours Lakenheath Reserves 4-1. Jack McLoughin grabbed a hat-trick for March Town United Reserves as they defeated local rivals Wisbech St Mary Reserves 6-2.
Toby Dawson and Peter Dockerill grabbed the goals for Whittlesford United as they remain third after beating Steeple Bumpstead 2-0. Ashdon Villa moved to the top of Division 1A as braces from Charlie Norris and Steven Leys helped them win 5-2 at Milton Reserves. They leapfrog West Wratting who were held to a 1-1 draw at
Thaxted Rangers. Clare Town are now only four points off the top two as they beat Linton Granta
Reserves 1-0.
Kristen Strickson-Head grabbed a hat-trick for Alconbury as they went to the top of the Division 1B table after overcoming Hemingfords United Reserves 5-2 and AFC Barley Mow slipped up losing 4-3 at home to Eaton Socon Reserves, Eaton Socon are now only a point behind Barley Mow with a game in hand. Liam Burch grabbed a brace as Chatteris Town Reserves overcame struggling Littleport Town 3-1.
Bassingbourn still sit top of Division 2A as they overcame Cambourne Rovers 2-1. Mott MacDonald still sit second as they won 2-1 at Papworth. The surprise result of the day was Sawston United Reserves, who won for only the second time this season defeating highflying Over Sports Reserves 4-2.
That win moved Sawston off the bottom as the expense of City Life who lost 5-1 at home to Great Shelford Reserves, Miles Brown and Nassim Osman grabbing braces for the visitors. There was an entertaining game at Gamlingay with Gamlingay United Reserves and Litlington Athletic playing out an entertaining 4-4 draw.
With leaders Mepal Sports match being called off due to a waterlogged pitch, March Rangers took the opportunity to close the gap at the top of Division 2B to two points as a Damon Shailes brace helped them overcome Swavesey Institute 2-1. Tuddenham 08 are third, two points behind the leaders with a game in hand as they beat Wisbech St Mary A 3-1, Robert Armour with a brace.
Meldreth moved to within two points of the Division 3A leaders Comberton United Reserves, as the won 4-1 at home to Cherry Hinton A. The Meldreth goals coming from a Craig Cole double, Carl Hawkins and James Cook. At the bottom there was an important win for Foxton Reserves 2-1 at home to Duxford United Reserves.
The top three all slipped up in Division 3B over the weekend, leaders The Eagle lost 5-3 at Burwell Swifts Reserves, Stuart Felgate grabbing a brace for the hosts. Second place Burwell Tigers were held to a 2-2 draw at Chatteris Fen Tigers and third place Wisbech Town Acorns lost 2-1 at home to Alconbury Reserves, both the visitors goals coming from Wayne Childerley. Daniel Butler grabbed a hat-trick for Somersham Town Reserves as the beat bottom club Guyhirn 5-0.
Fulbourn Institute A made it six wins from six in Division 4A as they overcame Kedington United 2-0, Fulbourn now sit a point off leaders Cambridge Ambassadors with five games in hand. Ambassadors won 4-0 at home to Buckden Reserves, with Daniel Baker helping himself to a hat-trick. There was some game at Wickhambrook where the hosts and Guilden Morden shared 10 goals in a 5-5 draw.
Fordham Reserves made it 9 from 9 in Division 4B as they overcome Wimblington Reserves 2-1 thanks to goals from Chris Avis and Luke Schunmann. Joe Griffin grabbed four goals is Isleham United Reserves won 5-4 at March Rangers Reserves.
Histon Hornets moved to the top of Division 5A as they overcame Thaxted Rangers Reserves 5-0 thanks to a Matthew Hart brace. Previous leaders Clare Town Reserves suffered a surprise 8-0 defeat at Hardwick Reserves, Luke Day, Josh Morrow and Adam Mackenzie all grabbing braces for the hosts. Luke Chadwick scored four and Alex Marr three as Barrington overcame Orwell Reserves 7-3.
Little Downham made it 8 wins from 8 in Division 5B as they overcame Marchester United 5-4 and remain top of the table on goal difference from AFC Christchurch who overcame Benwick Athletic Reserves 11-2 with Keith Harris and Joshua Ingram both grabbing hat-tricks.
Several of our women’s teams were in action too. Cambridge City won to stay top of their league while Histon were involved in a 4-4 thriller with Ipswich Town Development.
In futsal, Cambridge United kept up their winning streak as they registered their third straight victory with 6-5 win over London Genesis.
In rugby union, there were defeats for Cambridge RUFC and Shelford at the weekend with Cambridge losing to Blackheath and Shelford losing to Towcestrians.
In hockey, 10 of Cambridge’s 13 women’s teams in the East divisions won at the weekend and the men’s winners included Cambridge City 4ths and Cambridge South 4ths.
In American football, the Anglia Ruskin Rhinos were beaten 21-16 by the QMBL Vipers on Sunday despite a spirited performance.
And in motorsport, Cambridge’s Rob Huff ended his World Touring Car Championship season with a second place finish in Qatar’s main race.
Cambridge graduate Oliver Turvey was involved in two Formula E races in Hong Kong too. After finishing 16th in the first round, he came a more respectable 6th in the second.
