Albion by Mike Bartlett in Clare College Gardeen
Friday June 17, 2022–Saturday June 18, 2022
The first ever production of Mike Bartlett’s Albion set in a real garden is coming to Clare College this June.
Albion follows the story of Audrey Walters, who has recently purchased an old, grand house in the English countryside. Trying to restore its garden, ‘Albion’ to its former glory, Audrey begins to tear apart her family, unearth buried secrets, and blows apart the peace of the village she’s moved to. Amongst this chaos, friends will fall in love, a baby will be born and the lines between ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ begin to blur.
Reminiscent of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, Albion looks at the world through the lens of an explosive family drama, but is fascinated with the idealism of nostalgia against the hope of those who hunger for change.
Thursday, 16th – Saturday 18th June 2022 at 5.00 -8.00 pm.

Clare College Scholars’ Garden is a walled formal garden overlooking the River Cam. It forms part of the iconic Backs, listed as a Grade I Historic Park since 1995. Although it is not typically open to the public, the Scholars’ Garden is an idyllic and intimate outdoor setting with a seated capacity of 50. The college has level access to front and back. There is a ramped bridge over the river, followed by some uneven steps to enter the garden itself.
What’s Ons are broadcast across the day at 7.50, 10.30, 1.30 and 4.30, and at weekends.
